Christy Mazer, Tampa, FL
Christy moved to Tampa, FL in 2018 and lives by the beautiful Hillsborough Bay with her daughter and son. She grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and has lived in almost every major town along I-40. She knew she wanted to be a teacher from an early age, often setting up classrooms at home during the summer with her younger brother as her somewhat reluctant student. She has been working with children in some capacity virtually her whole life, even mentoring when she was still a child herself in 5th grade, and in a professional teaching role for over 20 years.
She attended UNC-Chapel Hill for undergrad, then continued at UNC-Greensboro and received a Master’s degree in Elementary Education. After working as a second-grade teacher in Raleigh, NC for 4 years, she began a tutoring business that she operated for another 4 years. After taking a year off from tutoring to have her second child, she began homeschooling her daughter 9 years ago, beginning in Kindergarten.
Homeschooling her own children has been a blessing and joy. She has taught in various other capacities including preschool art, homeschool co-op science classes, preschool Bible study classes, Kids’ Camp at her church for the summer, VBS, and has served in Children’s Ministry for the past 15 years. Currently, Christy also directs her daughter’s Challenge I level at her local Classical Conversations campus. She is currently working towards FL teaching certification and is expected to finish that process in March 2021.
Besides being a homeschool mom to her two wonderful children and chauffeuring them to their many skateboarding competitions and choir performances; she has also been involved in Community Bible Study (CBS) for the past 7 years, serving in a leadership role for two years and helping to start the CBS homeschool program for her local CBS group. She is an active member at Radiant Church where she serves in the preschool classroom and has led small groups.
Through these various teaching experiences, it has been Christy’s honor to work with students of all ethnicities, ability types, and needs. She believes that every child was created by God with a unique purpose and it is her joy to help encourage and equip parents along their own homeschooling journey. She believes learning is not about a curriculum or program but is about helping each child discover their God-given talents, interests, and skills and building them up to be used for their good. Homeschool assessments are a wonderful way to incorporate data-driven information to inform the best possible ways to achieve this goal. Christy considers it an honor to walk alongside homeschool families to help them achieve success for their children.
Christy is a homeschool mom to her two children, holds a M.Ed. in Elementary Education, and has taught in a variety of settings from preschool to high school, over the past 20+ years. She is a native of North Carolina and currently lives in Tampa, FL. Teaching is her passion and helping other families along the journey is a rewarding part of the homeschooling experience.
